The total FTSE 100 pension gap has rocketed from £41bn a year ago to reach a seven-year high.

Two years ago the deficit was just £12bn.

The figures come from a report by actuary firm Lane Clark & Peacock (LCP).

LCP said the funding shortfall is likely to pile more pressure on companies to close defined pension schemes for employees.
