Self assessed taxpayers who have paid for professional help get their tax return wrong more often than those without an accountant, according to a study by the National Audit Office.

The amount of tax collected by the Government fell by £32billion last year, putting further pressure on beleaguered public finances.

Revenue from income tax, national insurance, VAT, stamp duty, corporation tax and other levies fell by £21.7billion due to the recession, according to the National Audit Office's report on 2008-9 accounts for HM Revenue & Customs.
