A jeweller has been jailed for nine years after evading more than £7 million in VAT smuggling gold.

The European Central Bank has increased its benchmark interest rates for the first time since July 2008.

The risk of deflation in the 16-nation eurozone has disappeared, the European Central Bank's chief economist Juergen Stark today. "The risk of deflation in the euro area, which was never substantial, has however clearly receded since earlier this year and has now virtually disappeared," Stark said at an ECB conference in Frankfurt.
