Every office needs a mix of people, personalities and skills to be successful. So when hiring new employees, the first thing to consider is what skills and personality types your office is already made up of. This should help inform what is missing and what to look for when you begin the recruitment process.
So, with that in mind here is what I class as a good mix for a growing and successful business:
Starters are the people who come up with the creative ideas that essentially move your business forward. If they're not operating at a senior level, it's important to make sure they're given a chance to be heard. One idea would be to introduce a regular platform such as an email survey within departments, where ideas can be put forward.
It's often said that the last 20 per cent of a job can take 80 per cent of the time. As a business, a lot of our growth has come from our ability to manage a project thoroughly, from the initial creative idea to a successful conclusion. This is down to our finishers.
Finishers are the members of the team who can identify the right idea, stay focused on it and see the job through to the end. These workers offer the most value. To spot them, look for workers with incredible attention to detail; the ones who check and check again. Be aware that they may frustrate other members of the team as they can be misconstrued as a roadblock. However, when the job is completed, it's inspiring to see how much your finisher will have contributed.
Every business needs a group of people who will just get their heads down and get on with what needs to be done. These are your grafters and your business won't get far without them. They're not easily distracted so can get through a raft of work on a list without many issues. For us, we have a team of people who add products to our website to keep it up-to-date and we need to know they're able to keep up with that monotonous workload day in, day out.
4. Data wizards
In this day and age it's absolutely vital to have a team of people who can analyse data effectively. No matter what aspect of business you're involved in, tools like Google Analytics mean absolutely everything is measurable. Every company, no matter what size, needs people who thrive when sifting through figures to uncover lessons that the business can learn from.
Look for analytically minded people who enjoy puzzles and are happy to often work on their own. Initially in our e-retailing business we work collaboratively on the strategy of a project then our data wizards split off and work on their own to implement the concept. Without their ability to build code and harvest insight from customer interaction, a project would not work or have the ability to evolve.
5. People people
It might seem like a no-brainer, but you need to hire people who get along with people, at every level. People management is a real skill. Not everyone has it so you should value those who can run motivated teams.
These people are not only useful internally but externally as relationship builders with clients, suppliers and customers. Make sure these employees are frontline as much as possible as their ability to click with stakeholders will always generate the outcome you want.
