A new scheme to help small businesses reduce sickness absence has been launched.
NHS Plus is behind the initiative, which involves a new advice line giving business owners access to free professional guidance designed to boost the health and wellbeing of their workforces and deal with staff absence when it occurs.
Around 11 million employees in the UK take sick leave every year and, while most return to work, approximately 300,000 people go on to claim health-related benefits, costing the taxpayer about £13bn a year.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, sickness absence costs small fi rms around £700 per employee per year.
