Legal 500 2010 - The Eye of the Storm

For the 23rd year publisher Legalease has produced its UK Legal 500 – a publication that, as the name suggests, identifies the country’s top 500 law firms. It then subdivides these into regions (identifying the best all-rounders as ”Regional Heavyweights”) and specialisations – further dividing them into tiers according to their expertise and market strength within each of those specialities.

A number of firms (notably Manchester-based Ralli) have fallen out of the listing while others have been promoted. On the whole, though, the sector has continued to reel from a number of shocks and we would expect, this time next year, for the listing to have changed significantly again.

The biggest local – and national – legal event of the past year was the demise of go-getting Manchester-headquartered firm Halliwells this summer. Its administration occurred as the Legal 500 went to press and the publishers took the decision to retain it in the listings, which reflect activity carried out over the preceding year.

We have followed their lead because many of Halliwells’ teams have transferred to other firms, under which they continue to operate. Most of the firm’s Manchester operations, including what remained of the firm’s highly-regarded corporate and commercial team, have since become part of Birmingham-headquartered HBJ Gately Wareing. Hill Dickinson has taken over Halliwells’ Liverpool and Sheffield operations and the firm’s insurance team has joined London-based Barlow Lyde & Gilbert.

With this caveat we present a précis of the Legal 500’s findings for a range of specialisations of likely interest to entrepreneurs in the North West. Firms are split into tiers and, within each of these, listed in alphabetical order.
